Indes wins Dutch Design Award 2005

Indes has won the Dutch Design Award 2005 with a children’s glasses design. The design was chosen Best Consumer Product among over 700 entries. In addition the children’s glasses design won the Design for All Award. The Airdrive, a donor organ transportation box, was selected in the category Professional Products.
Indes designed the glasses for children in Third World countries. The glasses corrects sight problems at a young age and reduces the risk of blindness. The first introduction is focusses on India. Opticians in India are hard to find and too expensive, so the design meets several requirements:
- adjustable power of the lenses when being worn
- low cost price
- manufacturable on a single production line
The design has 2 lenses which slide over each other, thus determining the power of the lenses (from –0.5 to –6.5). By turning the knobs on the side of the glasses, children can adjust the glasses themselves. This makes the glasses suitable for everyone, ‘one size fits all’. The cost price per glasses are about EUR 1.50.
