Focusspec Childrens' Glasses

Focus on Vision

Many people in Third World countries with poor eyesight do not wear glasses because opticians are few and far between and glasses are too expensive. This prompted the Focus on Vision Foundation to start a campaign to send a million pairs of glasses to children in India, where many people are short-sighted. Correction of sight problems at a young age, improves a person’s quality of life and reduces the risk of blindness.

The power of the lenses varies from –0.5 to –6.5, and can be adjusted while the glasses are being worn. By turning the knobs on the side of the glasses, two lenses slide over each other, thus determining the power of the lenses. This ‘one size fits all’ principle makes the glasses suitable for everyone with poor eyesight. Since these glasses are mass-produced for Third World countries, the costs had to be kept to a minimum. These glasses can be manufactured on a single production line at a cost price of €1.50. Indes is a firm supporter of the project and lent its assistance on a non-commercial basis.

The Focusspec has won 3 Dutch Design Awards: Consumer product, Design for All and the Public Award!
